I am Solo Chair of the Salina Region in KS. We have a number of soldiers
from Fort Riley that attend our events and they have gone back to base and
helped spread the word. We have been approached by them to get an event
on post. We have found some brass that happen to be car-guys and they
are willing to work with us to try and make it happen.

If anyone is running events on an active military base, especially Army,
please let me know, we might have some questions for you.

Not really relevant, but when we were in Germany, the german governing
automobile bodies held MANY full on National road races at the various US
military air bases, ie. we got a lot of cooperation from the Military. Also, my
best buddy, after winning the German Formula Vee National Championship,
and then getting drafted into the US Army ... spent his "tour" running
Motorsports for Ft Hood, Texas. Included a go-kart track, drag strip and
moto cross track. At least pre 9/11 ... lots of Army racing fans.

The "pre-911" seems to be the issue. I was stationed on Fort Riley in the
late 90s and there was not so much as a welcome sign at most of the
entrances to the base. Now there are guards at every entrance.

Was talking to some of the guys on post and they explained that if we can
show that someone else was already doing it, then it will be easier to get the
lawyers to stick their neck out and say "OK".

This is one of the reasons I don't like people to hide behind a "handle".  If I knew who Techpreist was I could tell him how the Wichita Region was coming along with getting back on base and what we went through to get it done, but I don't so maybe next season when he travels down here for an event on McConnel we can help then.

Does anybody have the database that lists active sites by type? The National Solo staff will not be in until Wednesday, and we need to move on this.

Thanks!

I am not doing a very good job of hiding, my license plate says TEKPRST
and my sig gives away my title and my vehicle. My name is Barry
Stockinger but only a few Wichita members will know me by name.

I have not heard Wichita got back on to McConnel, that is great to hear!
We are trying to hold the event in Oct so next season will be to late. Is
there someone that can offer some help before then?

Thanks, that helps, but I need some examples of which military sites are being used. Especially helpful would be any Army base that we could name.

Sorry but you'll need to talk to the national staff.  Hopefully you can get a delay from whoever needs that info immediately.  Or, go to sccaforums.com and ask there.  Much more traffic than here.

Good luck,
Jim

RE: Abandoned Airfields

My spouse has discovered an e-mail list of Abandoned airfields. Use Google
and you can find the list.

We were successful in having a Solo event at Ft. Riley on Nov. 22, and it was overall a great event. We are in discussion about this year, as well.

I have looked at a site with the Kansas abandoned airfields. In fact, the Wichita Region has used the old Hutchinson Naval Air Base for Solo events for a few years now. Back in the '70's it was used for SCCA road racing. There is also a Walker Air Base not far from me, but farther from most of our participants.
