It was my experience during my 17 years as editor of San
Francisco Region's The Wheel that the publication would
bring in new members.
The publication enjoyed newsstand sales in Northern
California. That brought us to the attention of the
Readers Digest' QSP (Quality School Program) which had
school kids nationwide selling The Wheel (and thus
SCCA).
That's all gone now in the 12+ years since our
departure.
A key factor in the above is the Region's business
manager objected to handling the renewal process even
though the region received half the income from
subscriptions. It gave him more work than he wanted to
do. But that's not why he had a "nervous breakdown" in my
opinion. I suggest other factors, including the hiring of
a "consultant" who was paid more than said Business
Manager (who wrote out the checks) had a great deal to do
with it.
It does take work to bring in new members. Be sure you
are aware of it before proceeding with your own program.
